1986 Mercury Capri ASC/McLaren Prototype Is A Real Head-Turner

An intriguing 1986 Mercury ASC McLaren Convertible prototype has just hit the used car market with a starting bid of $12,375 and a Buy It Now price of $16,500.

First things first: the name. This has absolutely no connection to the British supercar manufacturer and racing outfit and was instead the result of the American Sunroof Company (ASC) McLaren. The U.S. company essentially took standard American vehicles, like the Mercury Capri and Ford Mustang and converted them into distinctive coupe and convertible models.

Powering the vehicle is a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 mated to an automatic transmission that drives the rear wheels. This model has 18,000 miles (28,968 km) on its odometer and is certainly quite the head-turner.

The listing doesn’t reveal how many prototypes were built, but suggests there are no other Mercury Capris from ASC/McLaren as rare and unique as this one. It is being sold on eBay through West Coast Classics that’s located in Torrance, California.
